TOP TWELVE TUESDAY ~ READING IN THE NEW YEAR

 T T T

I chose one classic novel for every month of the year.  They may reflect a holiday, season, or mood evoked by that particular month...

JANE-UARY ~ JANE AUSTEN

January is typically a cold snowy month so why not stay inside and read a novel by Jane Austen? I have chosen Pride and Prejudice but really P & P is a book you can read in Spring or the Fall. But then again it would be nice to snuggle by a fire with Mr Darcy...

FEBRUARY ~ L - O - V - E

Henry James' view of love wasn't exactly all hearts and flowers.  Washington Square's heroine Catherine Sloper would rather be alone than have a man who wants her only for her money.

MARCH ~ WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Out of Africa is Isak Dinesan's story of being a strong, independant woman trying to run a coffee farm in Africa whilst having an affair with a hunky pilot

APRIL ~ BLACK WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Zora Neale Hurston died a penniless unknown, yet she literally wrote the book that defined life for black women in Jim Crow era America, Their Eyes Were Watching God

MAY ~ LOUISA "MAY" ALCOTT

Little Women is largely seen as a winter book.  Instead celebrate Mother's Day with Marmee March, literature's best mom EVER!

JUNE ~ WEDDING BELL BLUES

The Age of Innocence centers around the engagement of Newland Archer and May Welland, but Newland might want to marry someone else...

JULY ~ THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL

F. Scott Fitzgerald was related to Francis Scott Key, writer of The Star Spangled Banner. The Great Gatsby defines a uniquely American era of history

AUGUST ~ IT'S GETTIN' HOT IN HERE

Grace Metallious' racy, steamy pot boiler Peyton Place turned up the heat on 1950s suburbia

SEPTEMBER ~ BOOK LEARNIN'

Go back to school with Jane Eyre, who is supposed to tutor Rochester's ward, but teaches her boss a thing or two about life and love

OCTOBER ~ SPOOOOOKY BOOOOOKS

We Have Always Lived In the Castle tells a creepy story the way only Shirley Jackson can

NOVEMBER ~ IN COLD WEATHER

In Cold Blood tells a bleak story, so why not read Truman Capote's master work during bleak days that stretch on forever like the Kansas plains?

DECEMBER ~ ZU ZU'S PETALS

The classic film It's a Wonderful Life is based on a short story called The Greatest Gift, which is in turn based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol
