BOOKS FEATURING TRAVEL

I've chosen a mix of contemporary, classic, and historical fiction novels where the main character(s) leave home for resort towns or other countries and continents - #s 2, 4, and 8 have film adaptations, 1 and 10 television series, and 5 is being made into a sequel of Practical Magic

Sanditon ~ Jane Austen

Austen's last unfinished novel. Mary accepts an invitation to travel to a fledgling resort town on the English coast

Out of Africa ~ Isak Dinesan

Memoir of Baroness Karen Blixen, who moved to Africa after her husband took her money and bought a coffee plantation - without her consent

The Wedding People ~ Alison Espach
Phoebe's plans to end her life are thwarted by a wedding party at the hotel Phoebe planned to die in - this novel treats suicidal ideation and depression as serious subjects, but the book is a humorous meditation on life

A Room With a View ~ E. M. Forster

Italy's first appearance on this list - Lucy Honeychurch and her persnickety aunt travel to Italy from England. Lucy throws out her guidebook - (a metaphor for Victorian convention) and has her own adventure

The Book of Magic ~ Alice Hoffman

(last book in the Practical Magic series) Kylie Owens is desperate to save the man she loves and heads to London to finally break the Owens family love curse. The aunts, Sally, and Gillian follow Kylie

The Unsinkable Greta James ~ Jennifer E. Smith

On the cusp of breaking famous, Greta James takes a cruise to Alaska with her father to work out her their grief for Greta's recently deceased mother

Big Stone Gap Series ~ Adriana Trigiani  (Most of Adriana Trigiani novels involve travel to Italy) - Ave Maria travels to Italy, homeland of her mother and the father she never knew she had

The Enchanted April ~ Elizabeth Von Arnim

Italy number 3!  A group of women rent a castle in Italy and discover the power of lady friendship, and their true selves

The Jetsetters ~ Amanda Eyre Ward

A mother and her adult children take a cruise and discover they are all hiding big secrets from each other

The Buccaneers ~ Edith Wharton

Her last unfinished novel about young women seeking husbands in Europe - based on real penny princesses like Jenny Jerome and Consuelo Yzaga

Honorable Mention : Henry James ~ Most of Henry James's novels feature Americans traveling in Europe
